Africa's second highest peak is a serious mountaineering challenge but achievable for fit trekkers. Our complete guide covers fitness training, gear list, acclimatisation and route selection.
Mt. Kenya (5,199m) is Africa's second-highest peak and one of the continent's most rewarding mountaineering challenges. Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mt. Kenya's jagged volcanic peaks and glacial lakes require proper technical preparation — but the route to Point Lenana (4,985m), the trekkers' summit, is achievable for fit, well-prepared hikers.
Fitness preparation — Begin a dedicated training program at least 8 weeks before your hike. Focus on cardiovascular fitness (running, cycling, swimming) and leg strength (squats, lunges, step-ups). Practice hiking with a loaded pack on hilly terrain. Weekend hikes in the Ngong Hills or Hell's Gate provide excellent local preparation.
Acclimatisation — Altitude sickness is the most serious risk on Mt. Kenya. Follow the 'climb high, sleep low' principle and never gain more than 300–500m of sleeping altitude per day. DALA's 5-day itinerary is designed with appropriate acclimatisation days built in.
Essential gear list — Waterproof shell jacket and trousers, insulated down jacket, warm base layers, waterproof hiking boots (broken in!), trekking poles, warm sleeping bag (-10°C rated), sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat), headlamp with spare batteries, and 3–4 litres of water capacity.
Routes — The Sirimon route (DALA's preferred ascent) is the driest and most scenic, passing through moorland and Afro-alpine vegetation. The Chogoria route (our preferred descent) passes the spectacular Hall Tarns and Gorges Valley — some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Africa.
Summit Day — Departure is at 2–3am to reach Point Lenana (4,985m) for sunrise. At this altitude, every step is an effort — patience and a slow, steady pace ('pole pole' in Swahili) are essential. The reward — watching the sun rise over the glaciers with Nairobi visible 150km away on a clear day — is worth every step.
