Best Time to Visit the Maasai Mara: Month-by-Month Guide

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is a year-round safari destination, but each season offers a distinct experience. Understanding the seasonal patterns helps you choose the perfect time that aligns with your interests, budget, and schedule.

July to October: Peak Season & Great Migration — This is the most popular time to visit the Mara, and for good reason. The Great Wildebeest Migration peaks between July and October, with over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles crossing the treacherous Mara River in search of fresh grasslands. The dramatic river crossings, where crocodiles lurk in the shallows, are among the most spectacular wildlife events on Earth.

During this period, predator activity is at its highest. Lions, cheetahs and leopards take advantage of the abundance of prey, making big cat sightings almost guaranteed. The dry weather means animals congregate around water sources, making game viewing more predictable.

November to June: Green Season — The 'long rains' (March–May) and 'short rains' (November–December) transform the Mara into a lush, emerald landscape. While this might deter some visitors, the green season is actually an extraordinary time to visit. The Mara is less crowded, accommodation prices drop significantly, and the landscape photography is breathtaking.

January to February and June are particularly excellent — dry weather, thin crowds, and phenomenal wildlife activity. Calving season (January–February) brings the Mara's resident predators to a frenzy as newborn wildebeest and zebra foals are vulnerable targets.

DALA's Recommendation — If budget is a priority, visit between November and June for lower prices without significantly compromising wildlife quality. If witnessing the Great Migration river crossing is your dream, plan for August or September and book well in advance.
