Some Background:

  • The picturesque and heart-throbbing volcanic Mt. Longonot and Crater rises from the floor of the Great Valley like a monolith up to 750 metres from the floor of the Rift Valley and 2776 metres above sea level. It is very popular with those on short term visit to Nairobi, those training for higher hikes, and those who just want to get out of Nairobi for unique memorable exercise.
  • The mountain and crater rim also provide great scenic views across the beautiful Rift Valley all the way to Lake Naivasha. Major wildlife attractions at Mount Longonot include buffaloes, elands, bushbucks, common zebra, giraffe, Thomson’s gazelles, Grant’s gazelles, and hartebeest. Several bird species can be found at Mt. Longonot so enjoy bird watching as you hike. Leopards have also been reported but are extremely rare to spot.
  • The volcano is considered extinct having last erupted in the 1800s and is located 60 – 90 KMs from Nairobi.

Itinerary

Day 1Maasai Village, Mara to Nairobi

o 7 a.m. departure from Nairobi along the floor of the Great Rift Valley escarpment with great opportunity to grab views and photos of ‘waking up’ in rural Africa and sunrise.
o We begin to hike at 8:30 am when it is still cool and it take approximately 2 hours to the crater rim and another 2 hours to go around and back. The entire hike takes 4 -5 hours so expect to get back to the floor of the gate at 1 pm.
o 2 PM departure for Lake Naivasha. It is the highest in terms of elevation and the most beautiful of the Rift Valley lakes. At 1910m (6200f), the water is fresh and the lake is fringed with dense clumps of papyrus, which was once used in ancient Egypt to make paper. Kingfishers use the papyrus as a perch, and herons hide in it while searching for food.
o Here you will enjoy popular bird watching with over 400 bird species recorded in the lake. Lake Naivasha is also a popular weekend retreat for Nairobi expat community for sailing, skiing and fishing, and you a great opportunity to network in case you are looking to set up in Kenya or just know more about our country.
o Afternoon sailing is common in Lake Naivasha as there are no crocodiles because the water is too cold for them at this high altitude. There are several hippos though that you will enjoy watching from a distance. Along the shores of Lake Naivasha are pristine vineyards producing grapes for Kenya’s growing wine industry.
o 5 PM departure for Nairobi.
